Gerard Steen

Gerard Steen is Emeritus Professor of Language and Communication at the Department of Dutch Studies, University of Amsterdam (Prof. dr. G.J.(Gerard) Steen – Universiteit van Amsterdam). He previously held chairs at VU University Amsterdam, in Language and Communication, and in Cognition and Language Use. Before then he worked at the University of Tilburg and at Utrecht University. He obtained his PhD from VU University Amsterdam with a thesis on Metaphor in Literary Reception. Before fully zooming in on metaphor, Steen worked in the empirical study ofliterature, cognitive linguistics, cognitive poetics, cognitive stylistics, and discourse analysis. He was the founder of the Pragglejaz Group and of the Metaphor Lab Amsterdam, developing MIP and MIPVU as new tools forreliable metaphor identification in discourse. This work enabled the production of the VU Metaphor Corpus and led to the discovery of the paradox of metaphor and the formulation and elaboration of Deliberate Metaphor Theory, including a new method for metaphor analysis. The Polish Cognitive Linguistics Association and the Institute of English and American Studies at the University of Gdańsk invite you to the international conference Cognitive Linguistics in the Year 2026 to be held in Polish and English.

Linguistics and phenomenology

I will review how Husserlian phenomenology has influenced thedevelopment of “the science of human language”, linguistics, since its recognized inception at the beginning of the 20th century, to the present. While major proponents of linguistics, including Chomsky and Lakoff, have regularly tried to portray it as a natural science, on a par with physics and biology, I will show how, from Saussure, through Jakobson, to cognitive semiotics, investigations into the nature of individual languages, language users, and the nature of language as a phenomenon have emphasized its fundamental interconnectedness with consciousness. In doing so, they have made use of concepts and methods from Husserl, Merleau-Ponty andothers, to help explicate the key role of (a) the (embodied) speakingsubject, (b) the character of language as a semiotic system, (c) the socialinteraction, and the dynamic relations between these three.

Walking tour: Gdańsk Old Town

Beach or Promenade Walk from Brzeźno (starting at Dom Zdrojowy) to Jelitkowo (3.6 km, 1 hour), stopping at the Brzeźno Pier on the way. The promenade is a part of a longer Tricity seaside promenade.

For those in good shape optional beach/promenade walk from Brzeźno to Sopot Spa (6.6 km; 1.5 hour). This is a scenic coastal path, flat and easy,with Baltic sea views and parks. The trip finishes with self-guidedsightseeing or pub crawl in Sopot. The journey back by SKM from Sopot toGdańsk Główny (main station) takes approximately 15–20 minutes.

On Wednesday, 16 September, all conference participants will have theopportunity to attend workshops free of charge .

The following workshops will be offered in the afternoon sessions, from 14:00 to 19:30: (1) AntConc; (2) The Sketch Engine; (3) Python-introduction;(4) Python 2; (5) statistics for text analysis. Each workshop will last 2.5 hours, including a 15-minute break. The workshops will be run by theconference organisers. Please bring your own laptop.
